What Laser Engraving Actually Does
A laser engraver uses a focused beam of light to permanently mark or etch the surface of a material. On wood, the laser chars the surface to create a dark, precise burn mark. On metal, it removes or oxidizes the surface layer to reveal a contrasting mark beneath. On certain plastics, it vaporizes the top layer to expose a different color or texture underneath.
The result is permanent — not printed on top of the surface, not applied with ink or adhesive, but physically part of the material itself. It won't scratch off, peel, fade, or wash away. For gifts, keepsakes, and anything meant to last, that permanence is the whole point.
And because laser engraving is controlled digitally, the precision is exceptional. Fine text, intricate logos, detailed illustrations — things that would be impossible to reproduce by hand at any consistent scale come out clean and sharp every time.
What We Can Engrave
We work on three material families, each with its own character and possibilities:
Metal
Stainless steel, aluminum, brass, and anodized metals all engrave beautifully. Common metal projects include flasks, tumblers, dog tags, keychains, business card holders, tools, and flat plate awards or plaques. The contrast between the engraved mark and the surrounding metal surface is clean, sharp, and unmistakably intentional.
Wood
Wood is one of the most satisfying materials to engrave — the laser interacts with the grain in ways that give each piece a slightly unique character. Cutting boards, serving boards, wooden coasters, picture frames, keepsake boxes, ornaments, and raw wood panels all work well. The warm contrast of a dark burn mark on natural wood has a timeless quality that photographs and gifts exceptionally well.
Plastic & Acrylic
Certain plastics and acrylic materials engrave with excellent contrast and precision. Acrylic in particular produces a frosted, matte engraved mark against a clear or colored background — striking for signage, awards, and display pieces. We can also engrave many coated plastics, laminate materials, and hard cases. If you're not sure whether your material is engravable, bring it in and we'll take a look.
A note on what we can't engrave: materials like bare polycarbonate, PVC, and some soft plastics don't engrave well and can release harmful fumes. We'll always let you know upfront if something isn't a good candidate.
